LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA PERSONAL INJURY BLOG

In California, all drivers have a legal responsibility to carry insurance to cover the damages of any car accidents they cause. At a minimum, motorists must have $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident coverage for any injuries they cause in a crash. They must also have at least $5,000 in insurance for property damage.

Regrettably, not all drivers comply with the law. In fact, one out of every eight American drivers does not have car insurance. Many others do not have enough insurance to cover the injuries and other damages they cause. Fortunately, if you are in an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver, you probably have some options.

Obtain medical treatment

You do not want to let someone’s lack of insurance dissuade you from protecting your health. Because some injury symptoms may not appear immediately, it is critical to go to the emergency room for medical evaluation. This is true even if you believe you have not suffered a serious injury. When you obtain medical treatment, be sure to keep comprehensive records.

Demand the responsible driver’s information

Even though the responsible driver has no insurance, you should demand his or her name, telephone number and address. You can also take a picture of the individual’s driver’s license. These details may be critical in obtaining financial compensation for your injuries and property damage. Naturally, you may have to ask the police to help you secure the other driver’s information.

Make some phone calls

If you have uninsured motorist coverage, your insurance provider may cover all or part of your damages. You may also want to talk to an experienced personal injury attorney. After all, you may be able to sue the responsible driver for your injuries, property damage and other damages.

While colliding with an uninsured or underinsured driver can make an unlucky day even unluckier, there is probably no need to panic. Ultimately, by taking steps to protect your personal, legal and financial interests, you may improve your odds of emerging from the accident in a good place.
